Training At SCYC

1,600 children taught to sail

Over the past 12 years over 1,600 children have been taught to sail at Abersoch. During that time the Club has been extremely fortunate in the Instructors and Senior Instructors that we have employed. Above all it is meant to be a fun introduction into a sport at which Team Great Britain excels, and we would ask all parents to bear this in mind.

SCYC offer various RYA recognised courses from shore-based training to on the water powerboat training, All courses are run between June/early July and September and on an ‘as and when required basis’, as long as there is the required amount of persons interested, and can be run to suit your needs.

RYA
Sail Cruising & Navigation Courses
at
SCYC

Dear Fellow Members

I have agreed upon a commercial arrangement with the Council to present, organise and run the RYA Sail Cruising Scheme at SCYC.

I am a member of SCYC and have been for many years. My name is Judi Jackson, and my boat is the Pandora International “Biscayne” which I sail and race at SCYC. I doubt if anyone could escape the beauty and charm of Abersoch and the enthusiasm of it’s sailing culture. I couldn’t, and my passion for the sport led me, among other directions, to become an instructor.

ABOUT THE RYA CRUISING SCHEME

For those of you unfamiliar with the scheme and syllabus, it is essentially split into 3 parts....

1. The RYA Navigation Theory courses, which are run in a classroom and we don't get wet! This theory syllabus involves 40 hours of tuition/study and leads to Day Skipper or Yachtmaster theory qualification depending on which course you attend. There are several ways these could be run, one example, over 3 weekends at SCYC.

2. The RYA Practical Sail Cruising Courses which are run on board a modern 11 metre Moody cruising yacht, unfortunately this can involve getting wet! There are practical courses beginning with 'Start Yachting' a 2 day (usually weekend) course. Following on there is the 'Competent Crew' 5 day or 2 x 3 day weekend course, then the familiar 'Day Skipper' course again 5 day or 2 x 3 day weekends. The more advanced qualifications are 'Coastal Skipper' and 'Yachtmaster' but if you are new to sailing yachts then Comp Crew or Day Skipper should be your target.

3. The RYA specialist courses such as 'First Aid', 'SRC VHF Radio Licence', 'Diesel Engine'.

Further info can be found at www.rya.org.uk

A little bit more about your instructor at SCYC: I started sailing in Abersoch in the Mirror Dinghy, which I bought on the beach. Living in East Yorkshire I continued my training on the Humber while crewing for members at SCYC until I bought my Pandora International “Biscayne”. She came from the Norfolk Broads and was initiated into the Pandora racing fleet at St Tudwal’s Bay where we have been together for the last 10 years! Over the past 18 years I have extended my sailing experiences and have trained to be a RYA certified Cruising Instructor, Theory and First Aid Instructor.

Much experience has been gained by yacht deliveries which include a Trans Atlantic trip 4200nm USA to Lagos, Portugal, Les Sables d'Olonne, Western France to Croatia. Also regular crossings of the North Sea, racing and cruising, to sail in the Issjel and Marken Meers of Holland, and around the islands of Denmark. I have crossed the Bay of Biscay several times, and sailed in the Med and Baltic.

I have been running the theory courses at colleges in Yorkshire through my sailing school Blue Diamond Sailing. As a Cruising Instructor I deliver the practical courses for sea schools in Scotland and Yorkshire.

To give you an idea of cost, the courses I ran this year in Scotland and Yorkshire were...

Theory Courses £320 including study packs, software etc

Practical Courses range from 2 - 7 days £199-£695, fully inclusive of all food, drink, safety and wet weather gear, marina fees etc

From the feedback and enquiries so far it seems lots of us are keen to learn more and gain the confidence to take off across the Irish Sea and beyond! It would be great to get these courses together where we could have some fun sharing our common interest and objectives. I will be posting some course dates on our SCYC website and will look forward to hearing your thoughts on this availability at SCYC. Please contact me with your interest and any queries by returning an email to judith.jackson@live.com or call me on my mobile number below.

Best regards
